Nigerian human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has criticized President Muhammadu Buhari for his extended medical trip to London, questioning why the president failed to provide medical facilities that could take care of his health.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the president’ s spokesperson, Femi Adesina, said Buhari extended his trip to the United Kingdom by one week to see his dentists. This news has sparked outrage and criticisms from Nigerians, with Sowore being the latest to voice his discontent.
In a post on his official Twitter handle, Sowore lambasted the president, stating that Buhari failed to build a dental clinic that could cater to his dental health. He went further to say that the president did not build an ear care clinic that could cater to his ears, nor did he create any health facility to cater to his medical needs.
Sowore’ s statement read, ” In his 8 years of misrule, @mbuhari didn’t build a dental clinic that could cater for 32 pieces of his dentition. He didn’ t build an ear care clinic that could cater for his two ears, not a molehill to climb to see the stars at night like he started his failed regime with London doctors, he’ s ending disastrously on the streets of London in search of doctors to treat indigestion” .
This criticism is not the first time that the president’ s medical trips abroad have come under scrutiny. Nigerians have consistently questioned why the government has failed to invest in the country’ s health sector, thereby forcing the president and other top government officials to seek medical care abroad at the expense of taxpayers.
Furthermore, Sowore’ s statement highlights the fact that the president’ s trip to London is coming at a time when the country is grappling with numerous challenges, including insecurity, economic hardship, and a deteriorating health sector.
Nigerians have called on the government to prioritize the country’ s health sector and invest more in building medical facilities that can cater to the health needs of citizens, including top government officials.
