The United States has placed a visa ban on those responsible for rigging Nigeria’s 2023 elections.

Per a statement made by Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday, the US reiterated its dedication to assisting Nigeria in cementing a democratic process and giving importance to the rule of law. However, Blinken refrained from naming the individuals that would be impacted by the visa restrictions. In a tweet posted on Monday, Blinken specified that a few individuals who flouted democratic norms would face visa constraints, stressing the US’s unwavering commitment to helping Nigeria strengthen its democratic and justice systems.

The United States Government declared that they would continue to enforce the visa ban on anyone who was found guilty of interfering with the electoral process in Nigeria. The US Government claimed that they witnessed instances of voter intimidation and violence during the governorship and house of assembly elections held across Nigeria on March 18th. While the US Embassy in Nigeria acknowledged the progress of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the polls’ conduct, it criticized the increased violence in Lagos, Kano, and other states. The US called on the Nigerian government to investigate the reports of violence and emphasized the likelihood of visa penalties for those individuals found to have a role in undermining the electoral process.
