A former governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari has insisted he’s still in the race for Senate President.
Yari, who is now a Senator-elect, stated this on Monday while addressing reporters on the sidelines of the induction ceremony of new and returning members of the National Assembly.
The All Progressives Congress, APC, had nominated Godswill Akpabio and Jibrin Barau as Senate President and Deputy Senate President, respectively.
Yari, however, claims every lawmaker has the right to seek elective positions.
“I am a loyal party man, nobody has told me that any position has been zoned to anywhere as far as the 10th National Assembly is concerned.
“Position of president of the senate is first among equals among the 109 senators. Any senator-elect who wants to occupy the position must seek the support of others which I am doing,” Yari said.
Stop Forced Marriage In North, CAN Urges Tinubu

The Christian Association of Nigeria on Monday set agenda which must be addressed by the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in national interest.
CAN said Tinubu should stop illegal marriages and forceful conversion to another religion in the North against the wishes of the converts.
According to CAN, Tinubu must be assertive in tackling ethnic and religious biases, adding that Nigerians should be able to gain access to economic and sociopolitical benefits in any part of the country where they choose to reside.
The President of CAN, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, stated these during the Church and Mission Leaders’ Summit, organised by the Gideon and Funmi Para-Mallam Peace Foundation in Abuja, with the theme, “Peace-Building and Christian Mission.”
At the summit, which was attended by various religious leaders, participants discussed ways to collaborate with the government and other stakeholders towards achieving a lasting Peace in Nigeria.
The CAN President said, “The incoming administration must utilise the goodwill of faith leaders to seek genuine peace that will be all-inclusive.

Tinubu’s Inauguration As President must happen May 29 – Agbakoba

A former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Olisa Agbakoba, has said the swearing-in of Bola Tinubu as the next president of the country is bound to happen on May 29.
Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was declared as the winner of the February 25 presidential poll with 8,794,726 votes.
However, his victory has attracted criticism, with many calling for the inauguration which is scheduled for May 29 to be put on hold, until presidential election petitions are determined.
In a statement on Monday, Agbakoba urged Nigerians to obey the rule of law.
“It is important to state that the inauguration of Mr Bola Tinubu on 29 May 2023 is bound to happen under our constitutional process.
“While the election tribunal deals with the petitions, there is no constitutional process to delay the inauguration on 29 May.
US Announces visa ban on Nigerian poll riggers, others

The United States of America said it has taken steps to impose visa restrictions on Nigerians involved in undermining the democratic process during the 2023 general elections.
This was made known in a statement by the Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, on Monday, published on the website of the US government.
America had on January 25, announced that it had imposed visa ban on individuals who disrupted recent elections in Nigeria.
In a statement, the US State Department quoted Blinken as announcing the ban on the unnamed individuals.
Blinken said, “We are committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world. Today, I am announcing visa restrictions on specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process in a recent Nigerian election.”
The Secretary of State stated that the visa ban was for certain individuals and not for Nigerians as a whole.
