5 Parties Raise Alarm Over Alleged Plot By INEC, Wike To Rig March 18 Elections
Rivers State opposition political parties to PDP have vowed to fight any attempt to rig the March 18, 2023 governorship and state house of assembly elections as they accused Wike to rig election in PDP’s favour. They issued the warning on March 15, just a few days before the elections.
The All Progressives Congress, National Rescue Movement, Labour Party, African Democratic Congress, and Action Alliance accused the Independent National Electoral Commission of conspiring with the state government to rig the election.
Tonye Cole, the APC governorship candidate accused Nyesom Wike of threatening opposition parties during the election.
He said; “INEC should assure us that the BVAS will work this time and that results will be uploaded at the polling units.”
“Then there should be adequate security at the Local Government collation centres on March 18.”
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, withdrew their suit seeking to inspect INEC’s material used during the February 25 presidential polls. The counsel for Atiku and the PDP informed the Court of Appeal that they would no longer pursue the case.
Meanwhile, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced that the March 18 governorship elections will take place in 28 states, with the exception of eight. He made the announcement during a meeting of the inter-agency consultative committee on election security. He explained that gubernatorial elections in the affected states are held outside of the general election cycle.
