Erik ten Hag reveals how Sir Alex Ferguson reacted to Man United ending trophy drought
Erik ten Hag has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson was thrilled with Manchester United’s drought-ending Carabao Cup win but urged the squad to keep pushing for more silverware. Manchester United ended their six-year trophy drought as they beat Newcastle 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup. Casemiro scored the opener for Erik ten Hag’s side at Wembley and they doubled their lead before the break thanks to Marcus Rashford. It is their first piece of silverware since they won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017, and it could be the first trophy of a potential quadruple, with United still in the FA Cup, Europa League and still having an outside shot of winning the Premier League.
Next up, they travel to Anfield to take on a Liverpool side who are beginning to re-find their form. Over the past few years, Liverpool have been the better side in the league, but there has been a power shift this term with United’s transformation under Ten Hag. The Red Devils are currently 10 points ahead of their arch-rivals in the table. They will be aiming for their first victory at Anfield since January 2016 where they won 1-0. United will also be eyeing their first league double over the Reds since the 2015/16 campaign.
Ten Hag is keen for United’s excellent form to continue and is not satisfied with winning the Carabao Cup, a feeling that is shared by Sir Alex. Asked how Sir Alex reacted to the Carabao Cup win and what he said to the players in the dressing room, Ten Hag told Sky Sports: ‘I think he was happy with the performance! ‘He was happy that Manchester United is winning [again] and he is hoping that more wins and more trophies are coming in.’
