Kano man bags six months jail for stealing fans
Tuesday, a Kano Shari’a Court sentenced 20-year-old Murtala Halliru to six months in a prison and ordered that he get 30 cane strokes for stealing 13 ceiling fans
“Halliru, who resides in Kano’s Gwammaja Quarters, was found guilty of one count of stealing after pleading guilty,” according to the Agency of Nigeria.
The NAN reported, Judge Nura Yusuf-Ahmad, who presided over the case, “sentenced the defendant to 30 cane strokes and six months in prison without the possibility of a fine.”
Also, the convict was mandated by Yusuf-Ahmad to pay N44,000 as compensation for the ceiling fans.
“The defendant committed the offense on February 23 at Kano State Polytechnic,” according to information provided to the court earlier by the prosecution’s attorney, Aliyu Abideen.
According to him, “the defendant was apprehended on the same day at midday while riding a bicycle with two ceiling fans on it, each worth N8,000, by the polytechnic’s chief security officer, Sani Suleiman.”
“The defendant confessed to having stolen 11 ceiling fans from the said polytechnic valued at N44,000 during the course of the investigation,” Abideen stated.
