Man United manager Erik ten Hag makes Wout Weghorst claim after West Ham win
Erik ten Hag lauded Wout Weghorst as “one of the best players on the pitch” in Manchester United’s comeback win over West Ham United. Manchester United are through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after a 3-1 win over West Ham at Old Trafford. Days after lifting the Carabao Cup at Wembley to win their first trophy in six years, Erik ten Hag’s side kept alive their hopes of an unlikely quadruple thanks to Nayef Aguerd’s own goal, Alejandro Garnacho’s superb late winner and Fred’s injury-time buffer.
Manchester United came from behind to beat West Ham 3-1 and book their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Erik ten Hag’s side were facing a rare defeat on home soil when Said Benrahma put the visitors in front, with United still trailing with 13 minutes remaining. Nayef Aguerd turned into his own net though, before Alejandro Garnacho put the hosts in front and Fred sealed it deep into stoppage-time.
Erik ten Hag praised the contribution of Weghorst who set up Fred for Man United’s third goal in the game. “I think he was one of the best players on the pitch,” Ten Hag said. “I think he was involved to see the corner, maybe he was in front when he came up together with Harry (Maguire) to force the own goal from the opponent.” Weghorst has started in all 13 United games he has been available for however his only goal for the club came in the League Cup semi-final first leg win at Nottingham Forest on January 25. Ten Hag is adamant Weghorst will start contributing to United’s goals for column. “It will come. I have the experience with so many players. I refer to (Marcus) Rashford at the start of the season, he also did not score in every game. “But I know in my experience it will come.”
