Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 Nantes: Mbappe breaks record as leaders go 11 points clear
Paris Saint-Germain defeated Nantes 4-2 to secure the victory and extend their lead atop the Ligue 1 standings to 11 points, with Kylian Mbappe becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer.
PSG took the lead after 18 minutes thanks to a goal from Lionel Messi, and it appeared that they would have a comfortable evening until only 17 minutes had passed. An own goal from Jaouen Hadjam doubled their lead.
In an exciting first half at Parc des Princes on Saturday, Nantes had other plans, with Ludovic Blas providing them a lifeline by catching Gianluigi Donnarumma out at his near post and Ignatius Ganago heading them level.
With a second-half header, Danilo Pereira gave PSG the lead back, and in the dying seconds, Mbappe scored the club’s 201st goal, beating Edinson Cavani’s previous record.
But just before the hour mark, Danilo rose to meet Mbappe’s precise cross with a towering downward header, giving the winners the lead once more.
When the VAR determined Hadjam had overturned Mukiele just outside the box after referee Jeremy Stinat pointed to the spot, Mbappe was denied the opportunity to break the record.
The deadly forward’s major moment, though, came two minutes into stoppage time when he spun sharply in the box and rifled home in his characteristically precise manner.
